Archaeology
Welcome to the Milton Keynes Council Archaeology website. For many people outside the area, the mention of Milton Keynes brings the image of the large estates, shopping centre and roundabouts of the New Town. With this comes the assumption that the area possesses little heritage. In reality, the New Town covers less than half the area that is within Milton Keynes, the rest being pleasant south midlands countryside of historic villages, market towns, woodlands and agricultural land.
There have been over 30 years of significant archaeological work, which is still continuing through developer funded projects. The team maintains the
Historic Environment Record (HER) - the principal database for information on the Historic Environment in Milton Keynes, a public resource which is available for consultation by appointment. General queries about Milton Keynes' Historic Environment can also be forwarded to the team using the
enquiry form. The majority of Milton Keynes HER records are now available to search on the national
Heritage Gateway. Additionally, details and locations of archaeological sites, find-spots, historic buildings and historic landscapes in Milton Keynes can be viewed online with the
MKi Heritage Theme.
