Welfare Rights Details

Milton Keynes Welfare Rights Group, based at Acorn House, 373 Midsummer Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes has provided an independent welfare rights service in Milton Keynes since 1976.

At the heart of the work is the concept that welfare benefits are a legal right, with high priority being given to ensuring the maximum take-up of benefits by those entitled to receive them. MKWRG provides free and independent advice on state benefits, assistance with completing letters and forms, finding out what can be claimed, and representation at appeal tribunals. MKWRG operates an advice line on 01908 200900 which is open Monday to Thursday 10.00am - 12.00pm, with an answer phone facility at all other times. Personal interviews can also be arranged, but please note that no-one will be seen without an appointment.

A management committee comprising of individuals and representatives from voluntary organisations controls MKWRG. Their goal is to effectively manage the organisation in an open and fair manner and they meet formally once a month.

The service is operated by a small, dedicated team of experienced welfare benefits caseworkers that are supervised by a Manager/Caseworker. The team not only provide advice and assistance to individuals but also resources for many local agencies and organisations, both voluntary and statutory, that have contact with claimants or potential claimants.

MKWRG operates a policy aimed at using resources in the most effective manner using strategies to reach greater numbers of claimants. Despite heavy demand for casework, time is set aside to allow the other essential elements of welfare rights work to be carried out e.g. training, talks, production of leaflets and take up campaigns.
