Nursery Education Funding - for three and four year olds

Free early learning gives children the best start in life. Through learning and playing with other children in a safe and structured environment, they will have a head start when they begin school.

What you are entitled to

  • a maximum of 15 hours of free learning per week for 38 weeks of the year over a minimum of two days
  • in a school nursery class, nursery school, day nursery, playgroup or preschool, or with a childminder if they are an Accredited Childminder as part of an approved Childminder Network.

When your child qualifies for a free place

The dates below show when your child will become eligible for their free early learning place.


If your child is born between:

1 April and 31st August: they are eligible for a free place from 1 September following their third birthday until statutory school age.

1 September and 31 December: They are eligible for a free place from 1 January following their third birthday until statutory school age.

1 January and 31st March: They are eligible for a free place from 1 April following their third birthday until statutory school age.

How the funding works

Parents must complete a Parental Declaration form at their chosen early years provider. The table below gives the termly grant entitlement.


Term:
Block 1, dates covered 1st April-31st August, maximum entitlement of hours 195.

Term:
Block 2, dates covered 1st September - 31st December,maximum entitlement of hours 210.

Term:
Block 3, dates covered 1st January - 31st March, maximum entitlement of hours 165.
