MIlton Keynes Council CPA Results

Milton Keynes Council is a 1 star council

Milton Keynes Council has been reassessed by the Audit Commission through the Comprehensive Performance Assessment, and has moved from being a 3 star to a 1 star council.

Although this is hugely disappointing for the council this headline score masks some real progress at the council and some genuine achievements recognised by the assessors. Housing, Environment & Culture have all improved from two star services to three star services (four stars is the best). Our Adult Social Care and Housing Benefits services have once again been rated as three star services.

Our overall score reflects a one star assessment of our Children and Young People service by Ofsted through their Annual Performance Assessment. The way the CPA works is that if the Children and Young People or Adult Social Care services score one star, the council's overall score cannot be greater than one star.

The council would like to emphasise that there was no change to the safeguarding children rating, which remains "adequate".

Much good work is already underway to improve our work with Children and Young People and this has been acknowledged by the inspectors. The creation of the new Children & Young People's Service Directorate sends out a strong signal of our intent to improve on perceived areas of weakness. The arrival of a new service director this spring will also bring fresh energies and ideas to this important area of our work.

It is also encouraging that our improvement rate, as measured by the percentage of performance indicators that are improving, is above the national rate. So we can be confident we are headed firmly in the right direction.

Nationally, we are not the only council to have been reduced to a one-star status, but we need to acknowledge the challenge we face here in Milton Keynes and use it as a springboard to go forward and drive our improvement. We will continue to engage with government departments and the inspectorates about improvement planning and what support we can expect to receive. We are determined to address the challenge of increasing our performance assessment scores and to continue to improve services for all the people who live and work in Milton Keynes.
