The Learning Difficulties and Disabilities Team at Connexions:MK, Milton Keynes Council’s young people’s advice and support service, held a parents event on Saturday 3rd July to demonstrate to parents of children from Special Schools in Milton Keynes how Connexions:MK can support young people with a learning difficulty or disability until the age of 25.
The event, held at the Connexions:MK Centre at the Point in Central Milton Keynes was a huge success with over 50 young people and parents coming to look around the Centre and talk to Connexions Personal Advisers. 17 year old Kurtus Avery Hawkins, from Slated Row School, gave an impressive demonstration of the Virtual Connexions Centre before parents and young people then took the opportunity to try it out.
Teresa Gibbons, Connexions Personal Adviser, said, "
The aim of the event was to show parents that support is out there, all completely free of charge, and available for young people to help them make the transition to adult life. Parents told us that they had found the event really useful and that they hadn't realised the range of services available to them. This made the whole morning a really worthwhile experience and one that will be repeated each year."
The event was supported by members of the ECCO (Exploring Choice Creating Opportunities) team and Connexions Personal Advisers from the Centre. For information about Connexions:MK services for young people with learning difficulties or disabilities, all completely free of charge, please contact the Connexions:MK centre on 01908 398300, email
