Where do I find my library card number?

  • The number is shown below the barcode on your library card.

What is my library PIN?

  • When you join the Milton Keynes City Council libraries you're issued with a four digit PIN. This can be changed online when you log in to your library account.

Why do I need a library PIN?

You'll need your PIN and your library membership card number (from the barcode on your library card) if you want to:

You’ll also need to know your PIN and have your library card with you each time you want to use the Libraries Xtra service to access libraries outside of staffed hours.

  • please contact your local library either in person or by phone.
(you’ll need to have your library card number to do this)
  • once we've confirmed your identity, we’ll tell you your PIN.

Email reminders

You can sign up for emails including:

  • renewal reminders - reminding you a few days before your items are due back
  • reservation notifications - telling you when your reserved item is ready for collection
  • loan receipts - emailing you a list of items you've just borrowed (instead of printing a receipt).

PLEASE NOTE: These notices are a courtesy service only and it remains your responsibility to return your items by the due date.

How to set up the library emailing service

You'll need your library card number and PIN to log in to your library account.

  • Go to the 'Personal Details' section to check that we have your current email address.
  • You can change your email address if you need to.
  • Select your preferred library from the drop down menu.
  • Tick the 'receive library notices via email' box.
  • To receive an email record of your loans, choose your preference from the 'Receipt Preference' box.
  • Remember to click on 'Update' to save the changes you've made and log out.

Has your library card been lost or stolen?

  • You can email us to report your library card as lost.
  • Provide your name, address and postcode.
  • At the earliest point, the card will be marked as 'Reported Lost' until you next visit a library with relevant ID and choose to either reinstate or replace your card.
  • Until you notify the library that your card is missing, any items borrowed on your card remain your responsibility.
  • There is a £3.50 charge for replacing a library card. This is increasing to £3.75 from 1 May 2024.
  • If your card has been stolen and reported to the police, you can present your 'Police Crime Number' to library staff and there will be no charge for the replacement.
  • To collect your new card you'll need to visit the library with proof of your current address dated within the last 3 months and proof of your signature.
  • Your new card will be given to you immediately.

How to prove your identity

To join the library with a quick membership you only need some physical or digital ID showing your name (like a bank card). To upgrade to full membership, visit any library with physical or digital proof of your address (something like a bank statement or utility bill).
