Residents in Milton Keynes can for the first time find out about and access key council services direct from their digital TVs and mobile phones.
The service offered by Milton Keynes Council can be accessed through most set top boxes that are sold with digital TV packages offered by companies such as Sky and Virgin Media as well as through some Freeview boxes with broadband connections. Residents can view the services via a DigiTV and mobile portal called Looking Local, specialising in local government services as well as relevant regional services from national organisations such as Transport Direct and Jobcentre Plus.
Other council information and services available on the service include:
- Request a free bulky item collection, school place application, vote form and recycling issue
- Report abandoned cars, missed bin collections, potholes, street lighting and pest control problems
- Information about recycling and rubbish collections and
- Information about education, social care and leisure.
Mobile phones that have the ability to connect to the internet can also display the same commonly requested information about council services. The council wants to make its services more widely available and easier to access and is going digital in time for the switch off of the analogue TV broadcast signal in this area in 2011.
Currently more than half of UK households have access to digital TV and to the interactive services such as those being offered by Milton Keynes Council.
