Adopted Core Strategy
The Milton Keynes Core Strategy was adopted by the Council at its meeting of 10 July 2013. Under Regulation 6 of the Town and Country Planning (Local Planning) (England) Regulations 2012, the Core Strategy is a Local Plan and provides strategic planning policy up to the year 2026.
The adoption of the Core Strategy follows several years of preparation which started in 2005 with the work led by the former Milton Keynes Partnership on the MK2031 Growth Strategy. The full preparation process is described on page vi in the Core Strategy.
To accompany the final publication of the Core Strategy, an Adoption Statement has been prepared in accordance with Regulation 26 of the Town and Country Planning (Local Planning)(England) Regulations 2012. Core Strategy Adoption Statement (PDF, 21KB)
In addition, a final Sustainability Appraisal statement has been prepared which sets out how environmental considerations have been taken into account during the preparation of the Core Strategy. Sustainability Appraisal Adoption Statement (PDF, 48KB)
The Core Strategy will guide the future development of the Borough and includes a new strategic land allocation for around 2,900 homes in the south east of the city. For details on the process followed for the production of the Core Strategy, see the "Core Strategy Examination" page.
Planning policy preparation does not stop and we are preparing the Site Allocations Plan to ensure that enough land is found to meet a future shortfall in the rural area. We are also starting to collect evidence for the new local plan, known as Plan:MK which will review the Core Strategy and extend the strategic planning policy to at least the year 2031.
Core Strategy and the 2005 Local Plan
The Core Strategy contains strategic policies and sets the framework for future detailed policies and Neighbourhood Plans. It only replaces the strategic policies in the 2005 Local Plan. Most of the Local Plan policies are saved and the Appendix C in the Core Strategy lists all of the Local Plan policies with those replaced by the Core Strategy highlighted in bold text.
Specifically the Local Plan policies replaced when the Core Strategy is adopted are:
S1 – S5, S7-S9, T6, EA4, EA4A, H3, TC1, CC3, PO1 and PO2.
