Milton Keynes Schools

Advanced Skills Teachers

Welcome to the MK page for those interested in Advanced Skills Teacher status and the work of our current team.

Milton Keynes values the contribution that AST staff can make to their own schools and our growing educational community. Our commitment is contained within this Vision Statement:

"The AST initiative helps put the leadership of teaching and learning and the career development of excellent classroom teachers at the heart of our drive to raise standards."
We believe ASTs are an important aspect of developing good practice in teaching and learning. The LA's future commitment to Advanced Skills Teachers is in recognition of the value of identifying excellent classroom practitioners and using their expertise in leading best practice within their schools and beyond. In Milton Keynes, ASTs are involved in promoting and developing good practice in a number of ways: coaching and supporting teachers and subject leaders in schools, working with Strategy Consultants and School Improvement Advisers to support the implementation of National Strategies where there is cause for concern and at times working independently to meet short term needs identified locally. School leaders will have responsibility for the day-to-day management of their AST colleagues. LA Advisers and Consultants will identify, in partnership with schools and ASTs, the priorities for AST outreach work. In some cases ASTs may be identified as essential to 'in-reach' activity or perhaps a blend of both. The LA will determine in partnership with school leaders the appropriate blend on an annual basis.

We are committed to measuring the impact of AST programmes on the good practice in our schools.

The National College for School Leadership

The National College for School Leadership has relaunched the AST web page. The new site can be accessed from here: www.ncsl.org.uk.

The NCSL has carried out research into what ASTs need, and the new page has all the information and resources highlighted as necessary. Every AST should have received a username and password to access this page.

Full details can be found on the following link: New Look AST Page - National_(66K).
