The PlatinumMK 300 bus service was unveiled in Midsummer Place on 5th January with brand new look buses.
The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Euan Henderson cut the ribbon at 11.15am. In his remarks The Mayor paid tribute to the partnership between Milton Keynes Council, Milton Keynes Partnership and Arriva that has contributed to the success of the 300 bus since it started in April 2009.
The brand new Mercedes buses will be going into service in the next few days carrying the new PlatinumMK 300 branding. Run by Arriva, the service connects Milton Keynes Central Station and Central Milton Keynes with Brooklands, Broughton Gate, Kingston and Magna Park. Over 75,000 people have travelled on the service since April 2009.
The new buses are state of the art low floor, easy access buses with lots of features to make the journey more comfortable, including a free wi-fi connection, air conditioning, a digital CCTV system inside and out as well as extra legroom and more space for buggies. Their hi-tech, cleaner, greener engines go further than the latest emission regulations so they are better for the environment as well.
At the launch event, one of the new buses was on display all day, attracting interest from bus users. Arriva and Milton Keynes Council staff were on hand to answer questions and give advice on the green options for getting around Milton Keynes.
To celebrate the arrival of the new buses all journeys on PlatinumMK 300 on will be free of charge over the next weekend (Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January).
Cllr Alan Mallyon, Cabinet member for Transport and Highways, said “this is the first tariff funded express bus service in Milton Keynes. This will form an integral part of the MK Star network. As more people come to live and work in Milton Keynes we want to see enhanced, modern and effective public transport systems to help reduce future congestion.”
Brian Drury, Commercial Director of Arriva, said “the new buses on Platinum MK 300 service will offer comfortable hassle free access to the heart of MK. We all want to do our bit to help the environment and people who live on the route of this excellent service can leave their car at home when travelling into the city and instead enjoy a trip on this premier service.”
John Lewis, Chief Executive of Milton Keynes Partnership said, said “This bus service has already been a great success and we are sure that even more passengers will be tempted to try the new PlatinumMK 300 buses with their greater levels of comfort and modern features.”
