Statutory Consultation: Proposed 20mph speed limits and zones in Central Milton Keynes and Surrounding Areas.

MK Council is formally consulting on the following proposed Traffic Regulation Orders:

  1. The Council of the Borough of Milton Keynes (Various Roads in Milton Keynes and Surrounding Areas) (20 mph Speed Restriction) Order 2021;
  2. The Council of the Borough of Milton Keynes (Milton Keynes and Surrounding Areas) (20 mph Speed Restriction Zones) Order 2021.

The effect of the proposed Orders will be as follows: -

  1. To introduce 20mph Speed limits to the following roads:

Waterside and Chadds Lane, Peartree Bridge;

Avon Grove, West Bletchley;

Abbotsbury, Westcroft

Russel Street, Woburn Sands. 

  1. To introduce 20mph speed restriction zones in the following areas around Milton Keynes:


Grange Farm;


Monkston Park;

Walton Grange.

On 20 November 2018 the Cabinet Member for Public Realm under his delegated powers authorised the prioritisation of a programme of appropriate sites for the implementation of 20mph speed limit and zone restrictions in residential estates. Each year a programme would be developed on the basis of collision history, community support, speed data and lifestyle.

Between 1 April 2020 and 31 August 2020, the Council received twelve applications from members of the public and local Ward Councillors to introduce eight 20mph speed limits and four 20mph speed zones, which have now been assessed and measured through the 20mph speed limit matrix and prioritised into a programme.

On 26 January 2021, the Cabinet Member for Public Realm (Councillor Emily Darlington) under her delegated powers authorised the implementation if this year’s programme.

The Council now intends to carry out statutory consultation on the proposed 20mph speed limits and zones.

As the Highway Authority, Milton Keynes Council is satisfied that the introduction of the above speed restrictions will encourage a safer environment for all highway users and in particular for pedestrians and cyclists.

Any objections to the above proposals, together with the grounds upon which they are made, must be made in writing and sent to the Council’s Traffic Regulation Order Team at Milton Keynes Council, Synergy Park, Chesney Wold, Bleak Hall, Milton Keynes, MK6 1LY, or by email to quoting reference TRO-300.

The closing date for this consultation is 1 April 2021.
