Machine Sewing Beginners (FULL)
Is this course suitable for me?
This course is right for you if you are new to using a sewing machine and wish to learn the basics.
What will I learn?
- How to thread up and use a sewing machine
- How to sew and construct simple seams, hems, insert zips, buttons and button holes
By the end of the course you will have developed a good working practice with a sewing machine and have gained enough confidence to construct a simple item such as a phone or pencil case, a bag or cushion cover.
How will I learn?
Through tutor guidance, demonstrations, making samples, following information sheets working at your own pace to develop your skills and achieve your goals.
Will I gain a qualification?
You will not gain a formal qualification; however this course can help you to move up to an improver’s course and you can also request a certification of attendance from your tutor at the end of the course.
What will I need to bring with me to the class?
For session 1 material will be provided. During this session your tutor will advise you what fabric to purchase for the remainder of the course (this may be different for each learner depending on your chosen project)
You should bring your own basic sewing kit with you from session 1: scissors for fabric and paper, tape measure, pins, sewing needles, tailors chalk, threads appropriate for your fabric, quick un-picker. You should also bring a square of natural cloth such as muslin or cotton sheeting to use as a pressing cloth.
We have sewing machines for the class, but you may wish to bring your own, if it is in good working order.
Can I talk to someone about my course before I start it?
It is usually possible to put you directly in touch with the tutor if a member of the Community Learning MK staff cannot answer your query.
