V4 Pedestrian Crossings

The Western Expansion Area (WEA) is situated between Crownhill and Stony Stratford.

Once completed it will include 6,550 new homes, employment, green spaces and parks, retail and leisure units and schools.

Occupation of homes in Whitehouse and Fairfields began in 2015 and is now increasing rapidly. However there were no safe pedestrian crossings across the grid roads.  A toucan crossing is now in operation between Fairfields and Fullers Slade. These schemes are part of the urgent work to provide safe pedestrian and cyclists crossings in the Western Expansion Area.

LATEST UPDATE:

Extension of Existing Road Closure including Calverton Lane for Construction of Roundabout, Signalised Junction and Major Sewer Works

The V4 road closure is being extended, allowing Anglian Water to lay a water pipe from the new underpass at Barrosa Way to Crownhill Roundabout, providing necessary facilities to the expansion area. The road closure will be extended up to Kiln Farm Roundabout to facilitate additional development works. By coordinating works we will prevent future road closures in the area and minimise disruption to residents and network users.

The extended road closure starts on 27th January 2020 to 29th May 2020. This is required for major works on Watling Street and Calverton Lane for the Western Expansion Area development. The diversion route will be revised to include the extension.

The works consist of:

  • Junction 3 and Calverton Lane Diversion (PDF, 2.2MB) – Removal of existing roundabouts and construction of 1 new roundabout including permanent diversion of Calverton Lane. Sewer diversions, new street lights, updated direction signs, carriageway resurfacing and new 40mph speed limit.
  • Junction 26 Signalised Junction (PDF, 2.2MB) – Construction of new access into Whitehouse opposite The High Street. Installation of 4 way traffic signals and redway crossing points. Sewer diversions, new street lights, relocation of bus stops, updated direction signs, carriageway resurfacing and new 40mph speed limit.

The V4 diversion will follow Millers Way H2, Great Monks Street V5 and Dansteed Way H4.

The Calverton Lane diversion will be through The Wealds towards Stony Stratford and down Watling Street V4 until it meets Millers Way H2.

Introduction

Construction began with the closure of the V4 on 10 June 2019. A signed diversion is in place for the road and Redway.

Follow the links below for the latest and previous updates. These include photos showing the site during the works and what the road looked like before work started.

Progress Update Summary

There has been a substantial amount of excavation for the utility providers and new ducts have been laid.  Gas, Electric and Western Power Distribution will be working on site for the next 4 weeks.

We have encountered 38 different services during the excavation for the new gas main, far more than would usually be expected. Each utility must be carefully exposed by hand excavation.

Western Power Distribution has completed half of their diversion and a new joint safely installed.

A major construction project, such as this, involves lots of different groups working together. There have already been over 60 different people working on the site to complete works.

Works happening over the next couple of weeks

  • final concrete pours to protect the heel of the retaining walls
  • starting to install the back-of-wall drainage.
