Right to Rent
Landlords are responsible for checking all new and existing tenants have the Right to Rent accommodation in the UK
The landlord must check identity documents and a wide range of documents can be used for the checks to cover circumstances where tenants may not have a passport. There is an online checking tool to assist landlords and to request a check on anyone who has an outstanding case with the Home Office.
Tenants must provide original identity documents to their landlord or any prospective landlord / letting agency for checking. The landlord or agency will take a copy of the documents for their records and they may need to check these again during the course of a tenancy.
