Summer Reading Challenge

This year the Summer Reading Challenge is going digital! Join the Silly Squad, Summer Reading Challenge 2020 for some seriously silly fun.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event where children are encouraged to read 6 (or more) books and talk about them with library staff or young volunteers - collecting incentives along the way and a medal and certificate upon completing the challenge.*

* In Milton Keynes for 2020 there will be no physical incentives, medals or certificates.

Due to the disruption caused by Covid-19 and the impact of social distancing on schools and libraries things will be a little different in 2020.

This year Milton Keynes Libraries and The Reading Agency are taking the Summer Reading Challenge online with an all-new digital aspect. It also launched earlier than usual to keep children reading over the summer and support parents and carers with children at already at home.

This year children can read their own books or download eBooks or eAudiobooks from RBdigital using their library card.

The Challenge started on Friday 5 June 2020 and continues throughout the summer.

This year, Silly Squad, the Summer Reading Challenge 2020, celebrates funny books, happiness and laughter and features bespoke artwork from award-winning children's author and illustrator, Laura Ellen Anderson. Children taking part in the Challenge join the Silly Squad, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh and get stuck in to all different kinds of funny books!

Children's reading can 'dip' during the long summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. This year, in light of Covid-19 and social distancing measures, it’s more important than ever to ensure that children are encouraged to read for pleasure and avoid the ‘dip’.

It's free to access and is a place for children to rate and review their books as they work towards their reading goal. It also features videos, games, quizzes, and digital (downloadable) activities to encourage children and their families to take part in the Challenge at home.

You'll also find loads of brilliant book suggestions to get you started, and tips on how you can keep reading even while the libraries are closed. They also have heaps of super silly activities, quizzes, videos, games and more to keep you entertained at home!
