As this is the last newsletter of 2016, here's a look back at just some of the work the Highways team has undertaken over the last 12 months...

From 2014, all highways and street lighting work in Milton Keynes is carried out by the Council's service provider Ringway.

Information about  what the Highways team cover, how to report issues and planned roadworks are available on the new Highways & Transport Hub

There are many factors we consider when planning highways work and one of these is wildlife. Milton Keynes is home to some rare species including the Great Crested Newt, which are protected by law so we have to be extra careful!

This project aims to improve the pedestrian links between the railway station and the town centre. A new road layout plus ramp, steps, new paving and planting are included in these improvements.

2016 has seen some varied weather across MK from snow and ice to flooding and gales. The Highways team monitor the weather closely to decide on issues like whether a gritting run needs to happen, if resurfacing work can take place and if emergency staff need to be on call to close roads.

We have over 56,000 lighting columns around MK that costs the Council a lot to maintain and light.  The street lighting team is always looking at new ways to reduce costs, reduce energy consumption whilst keeping the city's networks illuminated.

Milton Keynes Council has been awarded £280k of government funding to repair more potholes which was announced in the Chancellors' Autumn Statement. This is in addition to the £168,000 pothole repair fund awarded to Milton Keynes Council in May as part of the Government's £50m Pothole Action Fund.

Over the last year we have treated around 299,000m² of carriageway and used around 16,000 tonnes of material resurfacing the roads in MK.

New Redway sections have been created and footpath resurfacing has taken place in Bletchley and Newport Pagnell.
