Welcome to the February issue of the Highways Newsletter.

Although Spring is just around the corner the Highways team along with their service provider Ringway are still dealing with issues caused by winter weather such as potholes forming, Storm Doris and freezing road temperatures.

Since the start of winter there has been 56 gritting runs and 2,577 tonnes of rock salt has been spread across the road and redway networks.

On Thursday 23 February Storm Doris swept across England with wind speeds between 60 and over 90mph.

Milton Keynes was hit with strong gale force winds from mid morning until the late evening. The Council received reports from all over the borough of fallen trees, damaged utility cables, street lights and road signage.

We've installed a new footpath including lighting columns at Barnsbury Gardens in Newport Pagnell after local residents had contacted us.

Working with the two landowners the team secured an agreement to put the path in with the light lanterns being installed as the final piece of work.

The Council’s Highways team has reduced its carbon footprint and saved energy through changing street lights to LEDs.

Working with its service provider Ringway, the energy consumption by street lights has been reduced and old materials were recycled back into the industry.

Work crews are carrying out essential maintenance works on roundabouts along some of the city's grid roads during February through to the end of March.

This includes 13 roundabouts on the H8 Standing Way and 12 on the H3 Millers Way.

In winter surface water on the roads freezes and expands every day as temperatures drop. Water can seep into minor existing defects and make them worse which is why potholes tend to appear more often during the winter months than at any other time of year.

The final phase of the Fixing the Links project in Bletchley will see a new stretch of redway installed along Sherwood Drive.

This will link up the redway cycle network that runs over 340km around the whole borough.

Over the last few weeks the Highways team has been testing a new mobile weather station to provide more localised road surface temperature data. This information will then allow them to target future gritting runs across the road network.

The A421 dualling 'Pinch Point' project in MK was completed in 2015 however there is still a section of single carriageway between where this ends and Junction 13 of the M1.

The majority of this single carriageway is under Central Bedfordshire Council's control so we've linked up with them, SEMLEP and the DfT to continue the dualling to the M1.
