Welcome to the July newsletter which will be the last in this format. What?! We hear you cry ... but don't worry; there's a new eBulletin system that can deliver library news to you as and when it happens.

You may have noticed a pop up box appear when you first visit the council website; if you enter your email address and subscribe, you can then choose which service areas you'd like to hear news about. May we suggest you choose libraries!

Space Chase is this year’s Summer Reading Challenge produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries all over the UK. We'd like to invite children of all ages to take part again this year with us.

We'd like as many children as possible to read or have help reading 6 library books over the summer holidays. Along the way there are stickers to collect (watch out some of them are stinky!) and when you complete the challenge, you'll get a certificate and medal.

Last year we had nearly 3000 children participating in the Reading Challenge and we would love to see even more taking part this year, particularly with aliens to chase and books to save!

Space Chase is FREE to join and simple to sign up for just come into any Milton Keynes Library during staffed hours (or visit the Mobile Library). The Challenge begins Friday 19 July and ends Saturday 7 September.

You may have noticed that Wolverton Library was closed for a few days in May and when it opened again it was shiny and new!

We had a new carpet throughout, changed the layout with some new furniture and hopefully made it more welcoming and functional. There are still a couple of changes in the pipeline and so far the customers enjoying their 'new' library.

You can see a 360 photo and new floorplan of Wolverton Library (and all our libraries) on the Library Locations page on the website.

Newport Pagnell Library is the next building to have some well deserved TLC. Having opened 50 years ago (happy 50th birthday), the library will be closing temporarily from September to December 2019 for refurbishment.

The doors will close at 1pm on Saturday, 31 August and will re-open early in the New Year.

We will be adjusting the Mobile Library timetable from September to offer extra time in Newport Pagnell for library customers. Details will follow closer to the time.

We hope you'll think it's worth the wait while we modernise it; there will be some building works, decorating, layout changes and new furniture. We'll keep you updated on the website and through social media so be sure to follow us on Facebook or Twitter for the latest news.

The campaign to recruit young volunteers to become Summer Reading Challenge Champions has resulted in 90 champions ready and waiting to help across the libraries.

By Friday, 19 July when the challenge begins, all volunteers will have passed through one of the information evenings and know everything there is to know about helping the children to join and complete the Summer Reading Challenge.

As always, there will be a celebration and presentation evening in September to thank the volunteers for all their hard work.

HOOKED ON BOOKS CLUB

The final meeting of the Hooked on Books Club at Olney Library is on Saturday, 20 July 2019. Volunteers Lydia and Karen have run the club for more than three years and now it has come to a natural end. We'd like to say a huge thank you for all the time you have invested in making it a great club for 7-13 year olds and for sharing the love of books and libraries.
