Western Expansion Area (WEA)
Infrastructure and Development
In order to support the number of homes proposed and to ensure that the development is sustainable, the WEA will also provide 4 primary schools, 1 secondary school, sport & leisure facilities, multi-purpose community centres, a library, a health centre and large open spaces and play areas. Most of the original hedgerows, trees and ponds will be kept and incorporated into the open spaces. There will be a high street area including many of the public services, including the health centre which will open in March 2020, a supermarket and several other shops.
The first Schools to be built were Whitehouse Primary School which opened in September 2016, and Fairfield’s Primary School which followed in September 2017. Both of these schools are run by Inspiring Futures Through Learning, a Multi Academy Trust already running a number of schools in the wider area.
Construction of a Secondary School, Watling Academy, will commence early in 2019 and the school, which will be run by the Denbigh Alliance Multi Academy Trust, will open in September 2020 to take pupils completing their education at the two Primary Schools.
The WEA is now being served by its first bus route [service 301]. This is an evolving route which will cover more of the development as it progresses and the frequency of the service will increase in line with demand. The first dedicated open space and Play Park to be completed is Whitehouse Park, which opened in October 2016. The Parks Trust maintain this park and will do likewise for the majority of new parks and open spaces in the WEA. More information on their work can be found on the Parks Trust website. New parks are planned to open in 2019 at Lady Margery’s Gorse in Whitehouse and opposite Fairfields Primary School on Apollo Avenue at Fairfields.
The lead developer for the WEA is Gallagher Estates who are the principle landowners and infrastructure providers. They are working in conjunction with a number of house builders who will also help to provide some of the smaller infrastructure projects.
