Milton Keynes Council is helping young people in the borough with their employment opportunities by including those under the age of 19 who aren’t in full time education in their All in 1 travel card scheme.
Through including this additional group to the scheme, all under 19’s in Milton Keynes can now benefit from greatly discounted bus fares. A single bus journey with the card will cost them just 35 pence whereas previously it would’ve cost them between £1.50 and £2.00.
The Cabinet has released this extra funding to the All in 1 card scheme in order to give young people a helping hand when looking for work, travelling to and from interviews and to be able to offer flexibility to employers. It will also give them greater freedom and mobility generally to travel around the borough for a substantially lower cost and also helps to promote the use of public transport which in turn cuts down on congestion. Through the continuation of this scheme the council has been and continues to be supporting children and young people who are resident within the borough.
The All in 1 card was originally introduced in 2010 and was only available to children and young people aged between 5 and 18 who were in full time education, however this has now been changed to include all children and young people under the age of 19 regardless of whether they are in full time education or not.
The All in 1 card is so called as it is not only a travel discount card but the holder can also use it to get money off on goods and services at participation retailers and it acts as a proof of age card.
Councillor John Bint, the Cabinet member responsible for Transport, said: "We are delighted to be able to support young job-seekers, where the ability to travel is an essential part of getting to and from interviews and job appointments.
“The bottom line is the more mobile a person is, the more flexible they are, and the better chance they have of finding employment.
“The additional inclusions of the All in 1 travel card scheme will also give the local economy a boost by offering young people greater opportunity to travel around the borough for education, recreation and employment purposes”.
Where the young person is not in full time education the age verification will be undertaken by Connexions, the youth training and employment advisory service otherwise it will be done by their school or college.
