Council backs new parking and community improvements for Wolverton High St

Thursday 29 August 2019

MK Council is moving forward with plans to support the Agora shopping centre redevelopment in Wolverton, including introducing a one-way system in the town centre and improved parking.

At a council meeting last night, Cabinet Member for Resources and Innovation, Councillor Rob Middleton approved the decision to support the works in principle, subject to a number of steps, including consultation with the community and further details being agreed.

The proposals support the redevelopment of the Agora shopping centre in Wolverton and include the adjoining Council-owned car park. MK Council has committed to carrying out improvements to ensure the proposals have maximum benefit for the community.

Plans include a new one-way system, parking improvements on Church Street and additional parking spaces at St George’s Car Park. The site developer is expected to submit a planning application in September, with the hope of coming before the Council’s Development Control Committee in the New Year.

In 2017, MK Council entered into an agreement to sell its car park to developer, Love Wolverton subject to conditions they would need to meet, to be able to secure planning permission for the redevelopment of the site.

If the planning application is approved, Radcliffe South Street will be re-instated as a new route through to the new High Street, along with 104 new homes, additional parking and community space.

Councillor Middleton said: “This decision represents the next important step in making the £25million Wolverton Town Centre regeneration a reality.

“MKC will begin the detailed planning of the £1.5million public realm works which are key to making this developer led regeneration a huge success. This includes a new one-way system, parking improvements on Church Street, around 70 new parking spaces as part of a remodelled St George’s Way Car Park, improved pavements, and a new public toilet.”
