The Junior and Senior Music Centres run on Saturday mornings at Shenley Brook End School.

In addition the Music Centre runs groups after school; the Youth Orchestra and Wind Orchestra meet at the City Church on Friday evenings, and several ensembles run on weekday evenings at the Music Centre at Rivers Centre in Bletchley.

Emergency contact details will only be held at reception at Shenley and Simpson for children attending Music Centre ensembles. Children having lessons with MK Music Co-op teachers or privately should ensure that contact details are left with the teacher.

START Programme

The START programme is a one year programme for year 2 & 3 children, developed by MK Music Centre. It offers tuition and musicianship in a one hour package and pupils who have followed the programme are then offered a free term in a Music Centre ensemble.

The aim of our START programmes is for puils to develop their general musicianship skills and to begin learning the instruments.

September 2019 START courses are £50.

All sessions are on Saturday mornings at Shenley Brook End School.

Complete the application form stating your preferred START group and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis once payment of the term's fee is received.

START STRINGS

Music Centre START Strings Banner

The string programme will cover the following areas:

  • Developing a relaxed posture (essential for all string playing).
  • Some pre instrumental work - learning to feel the pulse, singing and movement activities, learning to work together as a group, developing listening skills.
  • Learning to hold the bow and bow the strings.
  • Musicianship, pitch and rhythm.
  • Playing and performing open string pieces.
  • Playing with fluency and confidence.

After one year:

  • Pupils would need to progress to individual or small group lessons either at school or through the MK Music Co-op.
  • Once they are having lessons they are welcome to join one of our Beginner Ensembles and we are able to offer the first term free of charge.

START KEYBOARD

Music Centre START Keyboard Banner

The keyboard programme will cover the following areas:

  • Pre instrumental work.
  • Exploring the various features of the instrument and moving on to using chords and playing with both hands together.
  • Using the fingers independently.
  • Musicianship activities, learning to feel the pulse, singing and movement, learning to work together as a group, developing listening skills.
  • Music reading.
  • Performance skills.
  • Playing with fluency and confidence.

After one year:

  • Pupils would need to progress to individual or small group lessons either at school or through the MK Music Co-op.
  • Once they are having lessons they are welcome to join one of our Beginner Ensembles and we are able to offer the first term free of charge.

START WOODWIND

Music Centre START Woodwind Banner

The Dood is a clarinet specially designed for young children. It has a reed like a clarinet but follows the same fingering as a recorder and is an ideal pathway into playing a woodwind instrument.

The programme with also include:

  • Some pre instrumental work.
  • Musicianship activities, learning to feel the pulse, singing and movement, learning to work together as a group, developing listening skills.
  • Music reading.
  • Performance skills.
  • Playing with fluency and confidence.

After one year:

  • Pupils would need to progress to individual or small group lessons either at school or through the MK Music Co-op.
  • Once they are having lessons they are welcome to join one of our Beginner Ensembles and we are able to offer the first term free of charge.
