Walnuts Care Ltd. (WCL) was set-up in response to parents’ requests over many years. Formerly connected to The Walnuts School, a community, residential Special School in Milton Keynes for young people on the autistic spectrum, the separate, not-for-profit company was established in order to develop services that could help meet local need.
WCL was formed on 1 July 2011.
WCL has the following objectives:
WCL is a company that is limited by guarantee. The company is also a registered charity.
WCL has four Directors.
Walnuts Care Ltd. (WCL) was formed in 2011 and was established solely in response to parents’ requests over many years. The not-for-profit company was set up in order to develop services that could help meet local need, and staff have significant experience of working with children and young adults on the autistic spectrum, many of whom have complex and challenging needs.
WCL has two functions:
Adult service : For those who are aged 18-25. Local alternatives for young people on the Autistic spectrum who have reached school-leaving age are limited. Walnuts Care and Milton Keynes College of Further Education have worked in conjunction to create Walnuts College, which is a provision for school leavers who cannot access mainstream College. Our learners work towards accredited qualifications that combine independence, living skills and, for some, the world of work. Milton Keynes Council has recognised the need for Walnuts College and it is they who commission the service.
NB : Since September 2016, Walnuts College has supported young adults who attend via Social Care &/or Health, in addition to those who come to us via Education. For these young people support can potentially be offered until the age of 25.
Children's service : For those who are aged 6-18. In order to address the current shortage of suitable provision, WCL provides 1:1 (or 2:1) personalised respite care which can be accessed at weekends, evenings &/or holiday times. Care involves community sessions, accessing local clubs and facilities or spending time together in the family home. Referrals for the service are received from the Children with Disabilities Team and the service is registered as a domiciliary care agency by the Care Quality Commission, although WCL does not provide personal care. Walnuts Care was rated as Outstanding in its CQC Inspection of May 2018.
