Post 16: options

Employment is an important part of adulthood, but finding work and training does not have to be something young people do without help and support.

Paid employment brings many benefits, such as increased independence, financial security and the opportunity to be a part of the wider community. Other advantages include making friends, and a certain amount of routine and stability.

Further Education 

Sixth forms and Colleges offer a variety of courses both vocational and academic which can lead a young person into higher education. Courses are provided at every level of learning to help young people achieve their aspirations.  It is important that young people and their parents/carers attend open days/events to make sure the school or college is the right option for them.

Traineeships 

Traineeships are designed to help young people who would like to get an apprenticeship or job but do not yet have appropriate experience or skills.  These courses provide essential work experience and training including English and Maths needed to secure an apprenticeship or employment.  Traineeships support young people so that they can learn at their own pace.

Apprenticeships 

Apprenticeships are government-funded work-based training programmes. They combine practical training in a job with study. Training is mostly in the workplace but may involve some desk-based learning too.  To start an apprenticeship you will need to be sixteen or over and not in full time education.  Apprentices will be paid the minimum wage rate or more whilst they are training. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level.

Supported Internships/Job Coaching 

Supported internships are structured study programmes based primarily at an employer. They enable young people aged 16-24 with special educational needs and/or disabilities to achieve sustainable, paid employment by equipping them with the skills they need for work through learning in the workplace. Internships normally last for a year and include unpaid work placements of at least six months. Wherever possible, they support the young person to move into paid employment at the end of the programme. Students complete a personalised study programme which includes the chance to study for relevant qualifications, if suitable, and English and Maths to an appropriate level. A job coach is someone who will support a young person whilst they are completing an Internship.  This includes making sure they are settled in on the first day and that all tasks are explained in small steps.

These are free short term projects which are designed to help young people develop relevant skills, qualities and attitudes needed to progress onto appropriate and sustainable education, training or employment options.

Study Programmes

All 16 to 25 year old learners with special educational needs and/or a disability are funded for an individual study programme. The aim of a study programme is to help young people achieve a substantial academic or vocational qualification or work experience.

Study programmes are tailored to meet the needs of individual students which reflect their prior attainment, aspirations and abilities and include:

  • substantial qualifications or work experience
  • Maths and English for students who have not achieved grade A*-C GCSE in these subjects by age 16
  • high-quality work experience
  • added value non-qualification activity

Higher Education

Higher Education can offer a range of qualifications, both vocational and academic.  Courses can be supported to meet the needs of a young person with special educational needs and/or a disability.  Entry into higher education however, requires the young person to have gained a level three qualification in a relevant subject(s).  Advice and guidance regarding applications to higher education will normally be delivered by the place of learning.

Voluntary work 

Voluntary work can help young people to gain additional skills and experience of working with others. This can completed alongside full time education or training.
