Help with Meals
If you’re finding it difficult to go shopping or cook your own meals, there are a range of services that can help you. You can have help on a permanent basis or short term if you are recovering from illness, after a stay in hospital or your usual help is not available. Getting meals delivered to your home can help you maintain your independence and quality of life.
Community Hot Meals (Meals on Wheels)
Milton Keynes Council has a contract with Apetito to provide a Community Hot Meals service which is delivered daily. The menu has options suitable for different diets and food suited to different religious and cultural beliefs. Food can also be plated and cut up ready to eat if needed.
Meals can be arranged for short periods or on a more permanent basis, and if booked early enough they can start from the same day you call. The service can be organised by contacting the Access to Adult Health and Social Care Team to arrange an assessment to ensure you meet our eligibility criteria. Please note there is a cost for this service and if you call on behalf of someone else, we will have to speak with the person receiving the meals to gain their consent.
Meal Delivery Companies
There are a number of companies which specialise in delivering meals to people in their own homes, the meals are usually frozen and will need to be reheated. The supplier will provide you with a brochure to allow you to choose your meals and normally you can order what you want over the telephone, online, by post or by giving your order to a delivery driver. You will have to pay for this service and how much you pay depends on the supplier and the meals you choose. Please visit our Adult social care directory to see which services are operating in the Milton Keynes area.
There are other options you can choose from instead of these services, including:
Supermarkets and shops:
Easy to prepare food and ‘ready meals’ can also be bought from any supermarket or high street shop. You can arrange to have them delivered to your home along with your groceries and other products if you find it difficult to get out. These orders need to be placed online and a delivery charge and minimum order may apply.
You could also make private arrangements for someone to come in and prepare meals through a Domiciliary Care Service
If you are able to get out of the house, you could consider joining a luncheon club, these clubs provide a hot meal and a chance to socialise and meet friends. They may be able to help you with transport to and from the club. Please visit our Adult social care directory to see which lunch clubs are operating in the Milton Keynes area.
