Funding care and support yourself

Advice if you're paying for your own care

If you pay the full cost of your care and support, you are known as a self-funder.

You may arrange and pay for your own care if:

  • you want to make private care arrangements and do not want Adult Social Care Services to be involved
  • Adult Social Care Services has assessed you and you are not currently eligible for social care support
  • you are eligible for support, but your financial assessment shows that you can afford to pay the full cost of your care
  • you have received 12 weeks of care without the value of a property you own being included in your financial assessment, and you choose not to have, or are not eligible for, a Deferred Payment Agreement
  • you are eligible for support but do not want to have a financial assessment. In this case, you will need to pay the full cost of your care

If your savings are likely to fall below £23,250, please tell us at least 4 months in advance. This gives us time to review your situation and complete any assessment needed.

If you have already arranged your own care and later ask us for an assessment, we will assess your needs using our eligibility criteria. We may not be able to continue the same type or level of care you have arranged privately.

More information and advice

Even if you are (or will be) funding your own care, you can still discuss your situation with Adult Social Care who may help you identify areas where you might need support.

We also recommended that you seek Independent Financial, Welfare Benefits and Legal Advice before making any major decisions.
