Consultation
We're asking for feedback on our proposals for a road safety scheme along H7 Chaffron Way, between V2 Tattenhoe Street and V3 Fulmer Street, focused on the junctions with Wallinger Drive, Shenley Brook End and Pickering Drive, Emerson Valley.
A recent collision analysis covering the period September 2020 to September 2025 identified five injury collisions along this section, two of which were serious. All recorded collisions involved right-turn manoeuvres either into or out of the side roads.
As the Highways Authority we have a duty to keep the network safe, so we have to act where there are an above average number of collisions have occurred on the network.
Traffic surveys also show that a notable proportion of movements at these junctions involve right turns—for example, up to 33% of vehicles exiting Pickering Drive during peak periods were observed turning right. These manoeuvres expose drivers to conflict with higher speed through traffic on the H7, contributing to an increased collision risk.
In response to these findings, the Council is proposing the following measures:
- Prohibition of right-turn movements into and out of Wallinger Drive and Pickering Drive
- Installation of physical traffic islands to enforce the restrictions
- Refreshing of road markings and upgrading of traffic signs to improve clarity and compliance
The proposals are expected to significantly reduce collision risk at these junctions; however, they will result in some increased journey times due to the need for diversion routes.
A consultation plan illustrating the proposed layout and extents of the scheme may be viewed below.
