Dog warden

Collection of stray dogs in Milton Keynes

  • SDK Environmental Limited collect all confined stray dogs found in Milton Keynes 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

What to do if you find a stray dog

  • We will collect stray dogs that are confined and under your direct control and care.
  • To arrange a collection please call 03444 828320 (standard rate and mobile friendly number).
  • Collected stray dogs will be kennelled for seven clear days and if unclaimed will then be re-homed.
  • The council operates a non-destruct policy and unclaimed dogs are only put to sleep on veterinary advice or if unacceptable aggressive behaviour means they are not suitable for re-homing. Dogs that cannot legally be re-homed will be put to sleep.

Lost dogs

  • If you think your dog may have been collected by the dog warden, please visit the Lost Dogs website.
  • This website has details of found dogs (click on the Milton Keynes tab in the bottom right hand corner).
  • Details of dogs collected by the council dog warden service are uploaded to the website within 24 hours.
  • If you do not have access to the internet, you can call 03444 828 300 between 9am and 5pm and we will check the website for you.

How to reclaim a dog

If we have your dog, you can reclaim it by calling 03444 828 300 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

You will need to provide:

  • Proof of residential address (e.g. utility bill); and
  • Proof of ownership (e.g. kennel club registration, recent family pet photo, vet bill). Photographs alone may not qualify as sufficient proof that you are the current keeper of the dog.

You will also be expected to pay a charge for the collection and kennelling of your dog:

  • Kennelling £22 per day
  • Collection of stray dog £78 per day
  • Delivery of dog back to owner £36
  • Statutory fee £25

Milton Keynes Council Policy is that all fees must be paid in full before a dog will be released in all instances and payment plans will not be considered. Our agent SDK Environmental Ltd is instructed to comply with these Milton Keynes Council instructions.

Advice on dangerous or aggressive dogs

Microchipping

  • In April 2016 it became law that all dogs must be microchipped - breeders must microchip puppies before they are sold at eight weeks.
  • If you sell, re-home your dog, or change your address, it is offence not to have the details on the microchip database updated.

Dog tag service

  • The Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that "every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it."
  • A telephone number is optional but always advised.

Animal welfare

Unfortunately, the dog warden service does not deal with animal welfare issues and you will need to contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

If you think a stray dog may cause you harm then read more information on the dangerous dogs webpage.
