Licensing - Make a complaint about a premises or operator

If you wish to complain about the operation, or report a breach of premises you should contact the Licensing Authority.

We'll investigate reports about licensed premises when:

  • There is a breach of the conditions of the licence
  • When a premises appears to be unlicensed
  • The problems are persistent and severe

A licensed premises must promote the licensing objectives:

  • Prevention of crime and disorder
  • Public safety
  • Prevention of public nuisance; and
  • Protection of children from harm

Licensing authority

The Licensing Authority will look to encourage compliance with all licensed premises in an effective manner which often involves partnership working and informal action, including inspections, visit and discussions.

Where necessary, formal action can be taken which can result in prosecutions. These can carry unlimited fines and up to six months imprisonment.

Who you can report a concern to

In some cases, your report may be best handled by other teams within the council or our partners, for example:

  • Under-age sales and counterfeit goods are generally investigated by Trading Standards
  • Noisy premises are usually investigated by Environmental Health
  • If you believe your concern relates to an unlicensed premises or breach of licensing conditions, you can report these to the Licensing Authority.
  • Antisocial behaviour takes many forms, from aggressive, noisy or abusive behaviour to neighbourhood disturbances involving drugs, abandoned cars or animals. If you’ve witnessed antisocial behaviour, please report it to Thames Valley Police.
