EU Sustainable Energy Week 2015

The 2015, EU Sustainable Energy Week sought to inspire consumers, public authorities and other stakeholders to join forces in shaping Europe's sustainable energy future by building on three pillars:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Decarbonising the economy with a focus on renewables
  • Research, innovation and competitiveness

The EU Sustainable Energy Week brings together the energy community that is indispensable for shaping the Energy Union. The Sustainable Energy Weeks deliver information to satisfy the expectations of the EU citizens as the large majority want to see a strong and united approach in energy.

Milton Keynes has energy efficiency and low carbon policies at the heart of its city planning. EU Sustainable Energy Week was an opportunity to provide updates on some of the policies that contribute to low carbon living.

The council's Sustainability Team joined with colleagues to plan events that save money and provide information on the council initiatives that help make Milton Keynes a leading light in sustainability throughout Europe.

LED Light Bulb Swap

Carbon Offset Funding enabled the Sustainability Team, Libraries, the Waste Team and local energy efficiency body, The National Energy Foundation (NEF), to stage a light bulb swap. Residents had the opportunity to change their old bulbs for longer-lasting, energy and money-saving LED bulbs.

Residents could exchange up to a maximum of ten old halogen GU10 (two pin spotlight type) bulbs and up to four standard old tungsten bulbs at any of our libraries and replace them with the LED equivalents while stocks last.

Other events included:

Tuesday 16 June - Transport

Throughout June, Milton Keynes Council celebrated all things ‘cycling’, including encouraging organisations and employees to join the National Cycle Challenge. To help celebrate the Bike Week, from 13 to 21 June, the Transport Policy team delivered an overview of sustainable travel (and initiatives) in Milton Keynes at a lunchtime event in the Civic Offices.

Thursday 18 June  - Schools

A seminar for schools, in conjunction with NPower, provided the opportunity to find out more about reducing their energy bills.

Friday 19 June - Waste and Recycling

The Environmental Services Team delivered an update on our initiatives to reduce waste in Milton Keynes.
