The 2014 Imagine 2050 Strategy (PDF, 1.1MB) has the ambitious target to make Milton Keynes close to zero carbon emissions by 2050.

To reach this goal, sustainability is considered in all Council projects and approvals of new-build and building refurbishment plans, transport initiatives and policies and infrastructure upgrades.

Key Factors

All UK local authorities have a statutory requirement to work towards Government commitments to reduce carbon emissions.  The Council has additional policies that meet the original aims of a city with clean air and green open spaces. These are key factors that help make Milton Keynes a great place to live and work.

The Council is a signatory to the Nottingham Declaration on climate change and to the European Union (EU) Covenant of Mayors.  A great deal of work has already been undertaken to meet these obligations.

Measures to reduce carbon emissions have been successful.  Between 2005 and 2014, emissions went down by 32%, a reduction from 7.8 to 5.3 tonnes carbon emissions per person.

Partnerships

The challenges of an increasing population growth are being met through innovative projects with like-minded partners. These collaborations bring external funding to the city that help meet targets and build on the reputation of Milton Keynes as a leader in low carbon initiatives.
