The final phase to upgrade the Council’s 57,000 streetlights to LED will be complete by March 2026. We currently sit at around 97% complete. This final phase includes dealing with cable faults which are becoming common place in our historic infrastructure, that we are working through.
LED lights use less energy whilst providing better levels of brightness. The lights are targeted only where needed onto the roads and footways, so light pollution is greatly reduced, which is much better for the environment They also last longer and require less maintenance than the older sodium, orange lights.
Grid road streetlights are a priority when we are looking at minor repairs but also, when there are cabling faults affecting several lights in a row. Cabling faults are the most difficult and complex to detect, they are also the most expensive to repair so we can't do everything straight away but work through a programme throughout the year.
Individual lights are easier to fix although on grid roads, we still need to factor in road closures and traffic management due to the high speeds.
Any remaining old, globe lanterns in the following areas will be converted to LED between July 2025 and March 2026. This is a small number of lights that were not converted in earlier programmes because the light was either not accessible at the time due to parked vehicles or overgrown vegetation, or there were other repairs that needed to take place before we could change the lantern such as column replacements or cabling repairs.
