What is Tenancy Fraud?

What is Tenancy Fraud?

We take tenancy fraud seriously, including issues like subletting.

The National Fraud Authority have estimated the cost of tenancy fraud to be £900 million.  Beyond the financial implications for social landlords, social housing fraud adversely affects communities and undermines the council’s ambition to reduce homelessness through a fair and transparent allocation of its housing stock.

The most common forms of tenancy fraud are:

  • unlawful subletting by letting out your council home without our permission
  • obtaining housing by deception by giving false information in your application
  • wrongly claimed succession by taking over a tenancy you are not entitled to
  • swapping homes with another council tenant without our consent
  • abandoning your home or failing to move into your home
  • Right to buy fraud

Tenancy Fraud constitutes a serious breach of the tenancy agreement. It can also constitute a criminal offence. Milton Keynes City Council takes a zero-tolerance approach to tenancy fraud and will continue to use its legal powers against those who commit fraud against the local authority.
