A new electrical power substation could be built in East MK to future proof the city's infrastructure as its population continues to grow. The new power substation would deliver more capacity and resilience for power supply to homes and businesses.
The Council expects to sell its land adjacent to Broughton Brook (off the A509) to Western Power Distribution to build the substation to support future power demand. The company will need to obtain planning permission for the station and create a new access road next to the site on land owned by the Milton Keynes Development Partnership (MKDP).
A substation reduces electricity voltage, making it easier and safer to deliver electricity to homes and businesses. It also increases the reliability of power supply, with power cuts less likely.
A decision to approve the sale process is set for 8 March.
Cabinet Member for Resources, Cllr Rob Middleton said: “The Council is committed to delivering vital new infrastructure across our city to help future proof MK as our population continues to grow. This currently unused piece of land will allow Western Power to build a new substation in the East of MK and strengthen the city's electrical network in the process. As we continue to rollout electrical charging points across the city, infrastructure like this is really important."
