Milton Keynes’ much loved libraries are getting ready to welcome even more local people in 2026, as Milton Keynes City Council has announced plans to hold a record 2,500 events across its ten libraries, with clubs and groups for residents of all ages.

As well as a massive collection of books, audio and digital titles, graphic novels, and free to use computers, MK’s libraries offer a wide range of free events, activities and regular clubs that help develop key skills and reduce social isolation. From creative workshops and Knit and Knatter groups to children’s Lego and Duplo club and digital skills sessions, there really is something for everyone.

MK’s libraries also host dedicated school visits, exhibitions from local artists and community events, receiving more than 500,000 visits in total last year.

Stony Stratford Library, which turned 50 this year, is one of ten libraries run by the city council with support from local volunteers, and during 2025 welcomed more than 16,000 people to 325 events.

“Our libraries are at the heart of community life in Milton Keynes. Places like Stony Stratford Library are so much more than the wonderful books they contain – this library has supported generations of families and continues to provide valuable services and help to local people. By offering even more events next year, we’re making sure residents of all ages can enjoy opportunities to learn, socialise and discover new interests.”
- Councillor Joe Hearnshaw, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People
“I founded the Stony Music Makers with other local musicians Vicki and Paul as a real grassroots initiative to bring folk music to all generations in a welcoming and all-inclusive environment. The libraries are the perfect place to show that educational and fun activities don’t have to cost anything. The sessions have been made possible by the incredible support of local musicians, the library team and the Friends of Stony Stratford Library volunteers (FoSSL).”
- Sarah, who delivers ‘Stony Music Makers’ at Stony Stratford Library
“I bring my grandson to the storytimes every week and he loves them. We listen to the stories, meet other families and take home lots of books to read. It’s something we both look forward to and it’s just one of the many things that our library offers.”
- Local resident, Bob

Earlier this year, the City Council invested in modernising its city centre library including a new and expanded children’s library on the ground floor, a new lift and major upgrades to its roof.  Further work is now underway which will enable the building to accommodate an even wider range of events, activities and community groups.
