City Council's summer scheme smashes records

Cllr Joe Hearnshaw comments on the summer activity scheme

An extra 400 children and young people are taking part in Milton Keynes City Council’s summer Holiday Fun and Food programme, smashing records since the scheme began four years ago.

Over the school summer holidays, the City Council is putting on more than 24,000 free activity sessions plus meals for children and young people who get benefit-related free school meals. It’s designed to give children new experiences, and as a welcome boost for families who might be struggling over the extended school break. This year, more than 3,500 children are taking part.

Hundreds of free activities are running until 21 August, and eligible families can book up to 16 places per child. All activities welcome children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

“This year we’re helping more families than ever before and I’ve had great feedback so far, especially as the activities are so inclusive. We’re giving a record number of local children opportunities to try new things, build their confidence and have fun this summer.”
- Councillor Joe Hearnshaw, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People
