Milton Keynes City Council has helped hundreds more local families access free school meals after working closely with schools across the city.
The City Council identified families who may be eligible but were not yet claiming the support. Schools then reached out directly, reminding them of the help available. As a result, around 300 additional children are now receiving free school meals.
As well as helping families, local schools also benefit as they receive extra funding from central government, known as the pupil premium, for every child who gets free school meals. They can use this funding in the way they feel will make the biggest difference - for example, by providing targeted learning assistance or helping pupils with challenges such as attendance or wellbeing.
This proactive approach means more families are getting vital support at a time when many are feeling financial pressure.
In the UK, children are generally eligible for free school meals if their household receives certain income‑related benefits including Universal Credit and Income Support.
