Milton Keynes City Council is set to approve a refreshed Fly Tipping Action Plan later this month, building on the success of its first plan under which fly tipping incidents fell by nearly 27% since 2021.
Nationally, fly tipping has increased by more than 20% since 2018, but Milton Keynes is bucking the trend due to targeted enforcement, community engagement, and investing in environmental crime investigations to gather evidence for prosecutions.
Fly tipping has a negative impact on residents, businesses, and local neighbourhoods, and the City Council is building on the progress made over the last five years to crack down even further.
The refreshed 2026-2031 action plan introduces new measures that take a proactive approach to tackling environmental crime and targeting the worst offenders.
Actions include:
- Introducing higher penalties for larger scale offences and seizing vehicles involved in waste crimes
- Expanding the use of specialist CCTV cameras
- Focusing resources on areas particularly affected by fly tipping.
- Work to tackle littering from vehicles, fly posting and graffiti.
The City Council will continue working closely with Thames Valley Police, town and parish councils, community groups and other partners to identify and tackle repeat offenders and reduce environmental crime across Milton Keynes.
"Our first fly tipping action plan delivered real results, helping to reduce fly tipping incidents across the city by almost 27% at a time when many areas of the country saw increases. However, there is much more to do. Fly tipping blights neighbourhoods, damages our environment and carries significant costs to clear up. This refreshed plan builds on what has worked well and introduces new measures to help us target the most prolific offenders and the areas most affected by illegal dumping."
