Milton Keynes City Council’s new centre for local people with complex disabilities is nearing completion, with the first service users set to be welcomed shortly after building work finishes in November.
Linford Wood Place is being completely transformed to create a modern, accessible centre for adults with complex needs. The existing building has been stripped back and redesigned from the ground up to provide high-quality spaces for short breaks, day services and specialist support. Families of the people to use the centre have been involved at all key design steps to make sure Linford Wood Place is full of practical measures to help and care for their loved ones.
Major structural work at the centre is now complete, marking an important milestone in the project. Over the coming weeks, the focus will turn to the finishing touches, including decorating the building, installing furniture and soft furnishings, and preparing the centre’s therapeutic outdoor spaces.
Set within a 1.7-acre site next to woodland, Linford Wood Place will be used by up to 59 adults each weekday and also provides essential short breaks for people whose family members care for them at home, helping those families recharge.
It will include 13 en-suite bedrooms alongside tailored activity areas, specialist equipment such as hoists, a training kitchen, cinema, and dedicated art and music rooms. Private gardens will also give people more opportunities to enjoy time outdoors.
The City Council has invested £13 million in the project, including £4 million raised from housing developers.
“It’s incredibly exciting to see Linford Wood Place taking shape and to know that we’re now only weeks away from completing this fantastic new centre. With the major building work behind us, we can focus on all those important finishing touches that will make this a welcoming, comfortable and uplifting place for people and their families.
We’ve worked closely with families throughout the project to create somewhere that meets people’s individual needs and gives them more opportunities to enjoy activities, spend time outdoors and be as independent as possible. We’re really looking forward to welcoming people through the doors.”
