After just one month, Milton Keynes City Council is already making clear progress on commitments set out in its new Council Plan for 2026-27.
The newly adopted plan sets out 70 actions to make Milton Keynes a better place to live, while ensuring the city council remains a “high-performing and well-run council” – a judgement made by the Local Government Association in an independent review of council performance.
Actions to strengthen communities, improve services, and boost opportunities for local people and organisations include:
- Revitalising Bletchley town centre, including improvements to road layout, parking and landscaping, alongside attracting new investment. Work is underway, and Princes Way is now re-open to traffic, with new pedestrian crossings.
- Preparing Milton Keynes’ bid for UK City of Culture 2029, showcasing the city’s creativity and potentially securing £10 million to invest in new cultural ideas. The bid will be submitted in August and shortlisted cities will be announced in November.
- Opening the first new household reuse and recycling centres in 45 years. Construction has already begun at the Wolverton site.
- Opening a new state-of-the-art day and overnight short break centre for people with complex disabilities. Families are currently helping the city council design Linford Wood Place, and it will open later this year.
- Making sure Milton Keynes can make the most of economic opportunities that the Universal UK theme park will bring to the region. Around 150,000 visitors each weekend are expected to use special shuttle buses to get to the park from MK Central rail station.
- Investing in highways maintenance, including fixing more potholes and using new technology to identify issues earlier. More than £10.6m will be invested in road repairs and maintenance over the coming year.
“Our Council Plan sets out an ambitious programme for the year ahead, but this is much more than a wish-list. We’re already starting to get things done. More than 95% of the last Council Plan was completed on or ahead of time, and we’re keeping that focus going. Local people will see real, practical benefits as we make progress.”
