Dyslexia and tips for improving spelling

Tips for improving spelling

  • From Key stage 2 and above ALWAYS provide the pupil with the correct spelling written down as spelling is a largely visual skill
  • The majority of words children will come across at this age are not phonetically regular so need to be taught as sight (whole) words
  • Point out common letter strings

  • Highlight these in a different colour

  • Provide a high frequency word wall in front of the child when asking them to write

  • Experiment with different writing and drawing equipment

  • Practise writing the spellings in big letters in the air

  • Encourage a cursive (joined up) script

  • Provide opportunities for dictating work (particularly helpful at secondary school)

  • Encourage visualisation of letters and words
