Waste collections from business premises

Business responsibilities

The Environmental Protection Act 1990 requires businesses that produce waste to dispose of it in a legal way. Businesses can either:

  • arrange for a collection via a registered waste carrier
  • or, take their waste to a licensed disposal point, provided the business itself has a waste carrier licence

You should receive a 'duty of care' (DOC) note from either your waste carrier contractor or the disposal site. This DOC note proves that you have complied with the legislation and disposed of your waste in a legal manner.

Businesses must keep copy of the DOC Notes, (also known as Waste Transfer Notes) for two years and must produce them to an Authorised Officer of the Council upon request. Failure to provide documentation can result in a £300 Fixed Penalty Notice or prosecution.

To find out more about business responsibilities in moving or disposing of waste or apply for a Waste Carriers Licence, visit the Environment Agency website.

Disposing of trade waste at the Household Waste Recycling Centre

For businesses and traders who hold their own waste carriers licence, business waste can be taken to the Newport Pagnell Household Waste Recycling Centre.

How can MK City Council help?

Milton Keynes Council does not operate a commercial collection service, although our waste contractor, Suez, operates a commercial service on our behalf.  To discuss commercial collections in the Milton Keynes area with Suez please contact 01908 372480. Other contractors can be found by searching for 'Waste Management' online.

If you are unable to locate a commercial contractor, Milton Keynes City Council can arrange for a waste disposal company to make collections from your premises at the contractors set rate (subject to an additional administrative fee)

How can we improve recycling at work?

Approach your business' waste carrier to enquire what items they can recycle in your workplace, as it may not be the same as what you do at home. Here are some top tips to get you started.
