Social media policy

Our social media accounts are monitored Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5:15pm with occasional out of hours service in special circumstances.

We will try to reply to your comments as soon as possible but sometimes we need to find out information from our service experts before we reply so we may be delayed.

If your query is serious, urgent, or involves personal details, please contact Customer Services by calling, 01908 691691. If you prefer, you could contact us over our online site complaints, comments and compliments form

If we block your account, this will possibly be because you've followed or liked the council only to promote a product or service. We will also block you if you've infringed the rules of a particular social media space.

When using our social media sites please be civil, tasteful and relevant.

Where possible, we will rely on the measures of protection and intervention which the social networking site already has in place (e.g. against illegal, harmful or offensive content), for example, by flagging comments or alerting them to any breaches of the site's terms and conditions.

We reserve the right to delete any posts that breach the rules of the community, or our own terms of use. Please see below for guidance:

  • Don't post messages that are unlawful, libellous, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented or racially offensive
  • Don't swear
  • Don't post content copied from elsewhere, for which you do not own the copyright
  • Don't post the same message, or very similar messages, more than once. It will be considered “spam”
  • Don't publicise your, or anyone else's, personal information, such as contact details
  • Don't advertise products or services
  • Don't impersonate someone else
  • Don't post any political comments

Please take care not to make libellous statements. We will therefore take down any statement that could be deemed to be libellous.

Pre-election period

In the six-week run up to an election - local, general or European – the council have to be very careful not to do or say anything that could be seen in any way to support any political party or candidate. We will continue to publish important service announcements using social media but may have to remove responses if they are overtly party political.
