We're asking for comments on our proposals to introduce a road safety scheme on the H4 (Dansteed Way), between V7 Saxon Street and V8 Marlborough Street, focused on the junctions with Sunrise Parkway, Linford Wood and Fennel Drive, Conniburrow.

A recent collision analysis covering the period September 2020 to September 2025, identified six injury collisions along this section, including one serious collision. As the Highways Authority we have a duty to keep the network safe, so we have to act where there are an above average number of collisions have occurred on the network. Notably, the majority of these incidents occurred at the Sunrise Parkway and Fennel Drive junctions and were predominantly associated with right-turn manoeuvres.

Traffic surveys also indicate that while right-turn movements represent a relatively small proportion of total traffic, they present a disproportionately high safety risk at these locations. In particular, up to 50% of vehicles exiting Sunrise Parkway during peak periods were observed making right turns, further contributing to conflict with through traffic on the H4.

In response to these findings, the Council is proposing the following measures:

• Prohibition of right-turn movements into and out of Sunrise Parkway and Fennel Drive
• Installation of physical traffic islands to enforce the restrictions
• Refreshing of road markings and upgrading of traffic signs to improve clarity and compliance

These proposals are expected to significantly reduce collision risk (estimated up to 83% reduction), although they will result in some increases in journey times due to diversion routes.
