Dog and cat microchipping

A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice, which is placed under the skin. Each device has a unique number and your contact details are registered against that number. If your pet goes missing and is picked up by our Dog Warden, or taken to a vet, the animal can be checked with a scanner or chip reader, the contact information retrieved and the dog or cat can be returned to you.

Please note: The microchipping of dogs has been compulsory in England since April 2016. You can find more information on the government website.

If your dog strays and becomes lost, you can find more information about what to do on the council's dog warden webpage.
