Central Library Improvements (July-October 2026)
Exciting improvements are coming to Central Library. From 13 July to early October 2026, the first floor (including Local Studies) will be closed to the public and staff while it is refurbished to create a better, more modern space for everyone.
During this time, we're continuing to offer a wide range of services at Central Library and across Milton Keynes.
What you can continue to enjoy at Central Library
You can still make great use of the library during the refurbishment.
- CHILDREN'S LIBRARY (open as usual) - including Storytimes, the Summer Reading Challenge and summer activities.
- READING AND BORROWING - a selection of popular adult books will be available in the foyer.
- DIGITAL LIBRARY (available 24/7) - access eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and more with the Libby, BorrowBox and PressReader apps.
- FREE WI-FI - use your own device to stay connected.
- PRINTING, SCANNING AND PHOTOCOPYING - available in the foyer via Kuario.
- SELF-SERVICE KIOSKS - borrow, return items and make payments easily.
- LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP AND RENEWALS
- RESERVATIONS - items can be reserved and collected at any Milton Keynes library. Reservations are free during the closure period (except SELMS reservations). Search and reserve items via the Library catalogue. If an item is only held at Central Library, it may be in storage during the refurbishment; this means that your reservation could take longer to arrive, potentially several months.
More services nearby
All other Milton Keynes libraries remain fully open and offer:
- FULL BOOK COLLECTIONS, STUDY SPACE AND SUPPORT
- PUBLIC COMPUTERS - available at Newport Pagnell, Woburn Sands, Bletchley, Olney, Stony Stratford and Wolverton libraries.
- IT HELP SESSIONS - including Tech Cafes at Newport Pagnell and Woburn Sands libraries.
- MEETING ROOM HIRE - at Kingston Library.
Extended access with Libraries Xtra
You can also use Libraries Xtra for flexible access outside staffed hours at:
- Kingston Library
- Newport Pagnell Library
- Westcroft Library
Libraries Xtra allows you to use the building, borrow books, study and use facilities during extended hours.
Helpful tips during the refurbishment

Looking ahead
These improvements will create an even better Central Library and we look forward to welcoming you back to upgraded spaces later this year.
