Consultation
Milton Keynes City Council intends to make the following named traffic regulation Order under Sections 84(1), (2), (3) and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984:
MILTON KEYNES CITY COUNCIL (VARIOUS ROADS, MILTON KEYNES) (40 MPH AND 50 MPH SPEED RESTRICTION) ORDER 2026 (No.2)
The general effect of the above proposed Order will be to introduce 40mph and 50mph speed restrictions along parts of H4 Dansteed Way (two locations), H5 Portway, H7 Chaffron Way and V6 Grafton Street, as part of five wider schemes to improve road safety, at specific locations, where there have been a high number of accidents in recent years.
Where there is a clear history of accidents, some of which are serious and life changing for the people involved, the highways team will consider and put in place highway interventions to reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring as well reducing severity and serious injury should accidents occur. These intervention works can include new signing, lining, road layout changes, or speed reductions. Speed reductions are a common intervention, which residents are always consulted on.
Across the 5 accident sites with interventions under current consultation, 47 accidents have occurred over the last 5 years, 8 of which were serious and life changing to some degree.
The types of intervention are recognised to reduce accident likelihood and severity, having been undertaken in the city and nationally for many years. It is usual for the city Highways Authority to undertake 5 or 6 projects like this each year. Interventions like these usually cost around £50k to £80k per site. They can reach up to £200k depending on the scale of layout changes, for example closing a crossover. This is good value for money in reducing accidents and severe injuries.
These changes are location specific and are not applied to all grid roads.
Milton Keynes City Council, as the Highway Authority, is required as a statutory duty to manage, maintain, and protect the public highway network, so it remains safe and serviceable for all users. On a yearly basis the Highway Authority considers the historic numbers and seriousness of accidents across our road network.
More details on the accidents are provided below.
