Council Tax Information

Council Tax charges are set each financial year. They are based on the budget requirements of:

  • Milton Keynes City Council
  • the Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley
  • Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority
  • parish and town councils in Milton Keynes

The amount of Council Tax you pay depends on:

  • the Council Tax valuation band of your property
  • the charge set for your band for the financial year
  • whether you receive a discount, exemption or are charged a premium

You can check your Council Tax bill at any time using  MyCouncil Tax Online.

You will receive a Council Tax bill each year.

Your bill will be sent by post unless you have signed up for paperless billing. If you use paperless billing, you will receive an email when your bill is ready to view online.

You can help us reduce costs and paper use by signing up for paperless billing.

The following information is provided alongside your Council Tax bill:

Additional parish and town council information

Some parish and town councils ask us to publish additional information for residents in their area.

For further details about your bill, check out our Understanding Your Council Tax Bill page.

The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) maintains the Council Tax Valuation List. This includes placing new properties within a Council Tax band and changing bands for properties when needed.

Every home is given a Council Tax band between A and H. The band is based on the estimated value of the property on 1 April 1991.

Band Values
A Up to £40,000
B £40,001 to £52,000
C £52,001 to £68,000
D £68,001 to £88,000
E £88,001 to £120,000
F £120,001 to £160,000
G £160,001 to £320,000
H £320,001 and over

These values are based on property prices as at 1 April 1991 and do not reflect the current market value of your home.

Any improvements or alterations that could affect the value of your home are not taken into account for Council Tax purposes until the property is sold.

The Valuation Office Agency has published a video that explains how Council Tax works. It includes information about:

  • how properties are placed into bands
  • what evidence is needed to challenge a band

You can find the video on YouTube by searching  'How Council Tax Works'

To learn more about how bands are decided, see How domestic properties are assessed for Council Tax bands.

If you think your band is wrong, see Challenge your Council Tax band.

If you challenge your Council Tax band, you must continue to pay your bill while your challenge is considered. You should not withhold payment.

If your challenge is successful, your bill will be updated and a refund may be applied, where appropriate.

Challenging your Council Tax band is free.

You do not need to use an agent to make a challenge. If you choose to appoint one, be aware that some fraudulent Council Tax and Business Rates agents operate across the country.

You can find advice on how to avoid scams and protect yourself on the GOV.UK website.
