There are a number of ways you might be able to get help with your Council Tax bill. This section highlights all the available discount and exemptions which are available for Council Tax purposes. It also provides information on charges where a property is empty and unfurnished.
The amount of council tax you pay depends on the number of ‘qualifying adults' and its household circumstances:
- TWO or more qualifying adults in a household: No discount applies, and the full council tax is due.
- ONE qualifying adult in a household: A single person discount applies, which is 25% off the council tax bill.
- No qualifying adults in a household: This can result in either a 50% discount or a 100% exemption, depending on who lives in the property. Note that having no qualifying adults is different from having an unoccupied property.
Please be aware that making an application for a discount or exemption is not grounds for non-payment of Council Tax. You must continue to make payments according to your current bill until you receive confirmation that the discount or exemption has been granted.
If you require assistance with your Council Tax account or apply for a discount or exemption, you can nominate someone to do this on your behalf. You will need to provide a letter of consent, which includes their name, address, contact details and relationship to you.
