Attachment of benefit

Attachment of benefits

If you receive certain benefits and we have obtained a Liability Order, we may ask the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to make deductions from your benefit payments to recover unpaid Council Tax.

Deductions can be made from:

  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)

The deductions can only be made if the person named on the Council Tax bill receives one of these benefits.

The DWP will tell you how much will be deducted from your benefit. Payments are usually sent to us monthly and will continue until the Council Tax debt is paid in full.

If you already have a deduction in place

Only one attachment of benefits can be in place at a time.

If a new Council Tax debt becomes due while deductions are already being made from your benefits, we cannot apply a second attachment. You will need to contact us to discuss a separate payment arrangement for the additional balance.

If you cannot afford the deductions

If you are experiencing financial difficulties, you can complete an Online Income & Expenditure Form so we can review your circumstances.
